Hivos.org Interview with Karl Kathuria Q&A: Open Source Psiphon Helps Iraqi Netizens Access the Internet Since mid-June, citizens in Iraq have been experiencing varying degrees of blocked access to the Internet. The Iraqi Government’s decision to block parts of the Internet is a violation of Article 19 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states, "Everyone has the right to … seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." One of the tools that is being utilised by some Internet users in Iraq is Psiphon. Hivos had the opportunity to chat with Karl Kathuria, VP Commericial Management at Psiphon, Inc., about how his company is helping make the Internet accessible in Iraq despite blocking by the government.

I was get a digital training for 3 days in Istanbul by Hivos , past week, with more than 30 internet activists from MENA and best Arab trainers. The workshop was in Arabic language :)

iGmena is the Internet Governance in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Why? The Internet is facing many challenges and threats at the global, regional and national level with governments questing for more power and control. To this aim, governments are maintaining surveillance, imposing Internet filtering, adopting strict legislations and using the UN and other intergovernmental processes to curb freedoms on the Internet. How activists, human rights defenders or journalists can cope with the recent defiance and understand these issues? Are they empowered enough with the adequate knowledge to share the responsibility? There is an opportunity to fill the gap and be ready to respond to those threats with the appropriate knowledge, skills and tools!
