By (NAMO ABDULLA) iraqi blogger 24/01/2012 Two new words attracted a huge amount of attention in America last week: SOPA and PIPA, the acronyms for two recent bills proposed by bipartisan members of Congress to end online piracy. While both bills target websites worldwide, PIPA was drafted to fight overseas websites in an effort to kill the role of globalization which is deemed negative by Hollywood and positive by Silicon Valley. Under massive lobbying, the two bills seemed to have more supporters than opponents in Congress. On January 18, when the bills were widely available to the public, 80 members of Congress supported the bills and only 31 opposed the legislation, according ProPublica, a New York-based, Pulitzer Prize-winning news site.

21 December 2011 In the aftermath of the 2003 US invasion, Iraq has struggled to rebuild infrastructure critical to providing  citizens basic tools for economic, political, and social justice and prosperity. Among the government’s main initiatives is increasing access to the internet and other channels of  communication. One of the biggest challenges thus far has been expanding physical connections, in a country  characterized by irregular electricity, insecurity, and distributed cities. Satellite and mobile data have been  critical to efforts to increase internet penetration to more than 2% of the population, currently the worst in the  Arab world. Despite these efforts, the quality of access in Iraq--the future of uncensored and unmonitored communications--seems under threat.

There are a lot of people who love to ridicule internet activism, they call it arm chair activism, sofa activism, along with other names. These people have completely missed the point of the last 10 years. The people have taken over the internet, the voice of the people has infiltrated every avenue of the cyber world and it is spilling onto the physical world. Here are 10 reasons for the effectiveness of Internet Activism: 1)It is extremely cheap, it costs a person nothing to take up activism on the internet. 2)Extremely convenient, people no longer have to choose between their crappy jobs and activism, both can be done, easily. 3)Extremely liquid, ideas and thoughts move at a very rapid pace, which actually destroys the capitalist flow of information. 4)It proves the actual inefficiency of the capitalist system, because all internet activists and bloggers will move to the more honest, coherent, stance of activist socialism.
